Giclee canvas print with
image wrapped side edges.
Process.
At the beginning usually a black acrylic base coat is applied onto stretched canvas followed by the application of various layers of acrylic colors done by several methods. Or sometimes I may use silver or gold paint as a bottom layer. Paints may be dribbled on or squeezed out of a squeeze bottle, or painted on with a brush. Paints then may be blotted, smeared with a brush, or diluted with acrylic water tension breaker which causes colors to run randomly. Once I am satisfied with the look of the painting I stop to let it dry.
The "photo" elements that sit on the surface are objects that are glued on after the acrylic painting is completed. I start with a scan or digital photograph of the painted canvas, imaged in Photoshop on my computer. The digital objects are gotten by selecting specific physical objects like rope, tools, wood, fruit, etc., and scanning these on a flatbed scanner to get a digital image. I then layer on the objects in Photoshop, move them about, size them, all to get a satisfactory composition. Finally these objects are printed onto canvas, cut out with a sharp knife, and pasted to the surface of the painting using an acid free glue.
Intentions.
These paintings are about layers. They are first about the juxtaposition between the painting and the unexpected objects found on the surface. Secondly they are about the careful organization of these elements to create movements and patterns. Thirdly they are about strong and vibrant colors that infuse the whole work with energy.
Display.
I prefer to make Giclee prints on canvas because I believe that in this way they gain more of a physical presence. I also am able to achieve more vivid coloration which is important to me. Also because the canvas prints are stretched on wood stretcher bars the image surface projects 1 1/2 inches out from the wall plane.
